German tennis federation imposes betting ban, quadruples fines

Hamburg (dpa) - The German tennis federation (DTB) has issued a betting ban for players and their entourages and quadrupled the fines for those caught gambling in the sport.

The DTB said in a press release on Monday that maximum fines are now 100,000 euros (147,000 dollars), up from 25,000 euros (37,000 dollars).

The decision was made over the weekend at the annual DTB members' meeting in Dresden in the wake of recent reports and investigation into alleged corruption in the sport. The DTB said the rule changes were in line with those made by the International Tennis Federation and the men's and women's tours.
