Danai survives marathon fight

Danai Udomchoke survived a tough first round challenge from Indian Harsh Mankad as he edged out the stubborn opponent 7-6 (9/7) 7-6 (8/6) after two hours and six minutes in the US$150,000 Malaysia Open yesterday.

The eighth seed Thai fell 1-4 in the first set tie-break and at 3-5 in the  second set before prevailing  to book a second round clash against either Uzbek Denis Istomin or Ukranian Sergiy Stakhovsky.

But compatriot Sonchat Ratiwatana, who is seeded second in the doubles category along with his brother Sanchai,  lost a three-set battle to Slovak Filip Polasek 7-6 3-6 7-5 in the encounter.
