Natee refused medical, says AIA

Gay rights activist Natee Teerarojjanapongs was a policyholder with American International Assurance (Thailand), according to Thomas James White, the company's executive vice president and general manager.

White said yesterday that Natee's policy, which lasted 12 years, was opened in May 1987 and surrendered in October 1999. He also received the surrender value accordingly.

Natee, president of the Sexual Diversity Group and the Gay Political Group of Thailand, complained earlier this month that he was refused life assurance by an AIA agent who said the company has a policy not to provide life insurance for gays or bisexuals.

Natee submitted another application to AIA in August 1991 and the company later requested a medical examination, but he refused to attend, White said.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC) and the Thai Life Assurance Association will soon issue a certification for sexual diversity, confirming that homosexuals have a right to purchase a life insurance policy.

The move came after a gay man filed complaints with the OIC, accusing AIA of breaching their rights by refusing to sell life assurance to homosexuals.

Natee and his supporters yesterday marched to the OIC, demanding action be taken against the insurance firm.

Natee called for AIA to apologise to him in public.
