Probe into Bannawit to go ahead

The Defence Ministry will push ahead with its criminal probe of Admiral Bannawit Kengrien in spite of his resignation and two failed lawsuits against the government.

"The investigation into Bannawit's involvement in mismanagement of the Defence-run Battery Organisation will proceed to completion even though he has left the military service," spokesman Lt-General Phitsanu Putchakan said yesterday.

Bannawit quit as Defence chief adviser on November 6 amid inquiries triggered by his criticism of the government and the junta. He later filed criminal and administrative actions for alleged unfair treatment leading to his resignation.

Phitsanu said the Central Administrative Court had thrown out Bannawit's petition last Tuesday and the Criminal Court had dismissed his lawsuit last week.

Bannawit took the government to court for transferring him from Defence Ministry deputy permanent secretary to an advisory post.

The Criminal Court ruled that the military reshuffle was beyond its jurisdiction while the Administrative Court said Bannawit had failed to demonstrate how he had been mistreated by the transfer order in terms of rank, career prospects or compensation.
