Carvalho injury could be fractured vertebrae

London (dpa) - Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho has broken bones in his back, according to the Portugal national team doctor Henrique Jones on Wednesday.

The defender was forced to leave the field during Sunday's 1-1 draw with Everton after falling awkwardly in an aerial challenge with Yakubu.

"Ricardo has suffered fractures of the small bones on his second, third and fourth vertebrae and will be out for eight weeks," Jones said.

Chelsea have refused to confirm his diagnosis as they await the results of their own scan.
