Thailand buoyant as home tie looms

Thailand will put their unbeaten home record over three years on the line when they take on Yemen in the return leg of their 2010 World Cup second qualifying round.

Having successfully negotiated tough conditions in Yemen last week, when they faced not only high-altitude atmosphere but also a dramatic change in temperature while playing, by sealing a 1-1 draw, they know that qualification for the next round is very much within their grasp.

The fact that the hosts have never lost at the Supachalasai Stadium since a 2-1 reverse to Malaysia in a friendly in August 2004, should provide a boost to their confidence ahead of the fixture on Sunday.

With his players emerging from the Yemen test unscathed, national coach Chanvit Pholchivin believes that the onus is on his side to finish the job.

"The lads are in good shape. Thankfully, nobody sustained any injury during the first-leg match.

"This will make easier my job of picking the team. I'm sure we could move past them [Yemen]," he said.

However, the coach is aware of the perils of being overconfident."In any game, we must show respect to the opponents. This is a vital game," he said.
