Harsh penalties for vote-buying

Things to keep in mind during the run-up to the election:

Published on November 15, 2007

If people receive money or any kind of present from a candidate or candidate's canvasser, they could end up serving one to five years in jail, and/or a Bt20,000-Bt100,000 fine. An individual's voting right would also be revoked for five years.

However, if people inform the Election Commission about such matters by December 30, 2007, they would be exempt from penalties.

On the other hand, if people inform the police, the Election Commission or authorised officials, they could face up to half the

prescribed fine.

If people tear up their ballot card, they could be jailed for up to a year and hit with a fine up to Bt20,000, plus a five-year revocation of their voting rights.

Selling or providing liquor to the public is prohibited from 6pm on December 22 till midnight on December 23.

People are not allowed to take photos of their marked ballot cards with a digital camera, mobile phone or any other device.
