Cuba scores 6th straight win at baseball World Cup

Taipei (dpa) - Favourites Cuba scored its sixth straight win by beating Thailand 11-1 at the 37th baseball World Cup in Taiwan on Tuesday.



Host team Taiwan also won its ticket to the quarter finals by blanking Panama, 10-0.

 In other games Tuesday, Japan clobbered Italy 10-0, Canada edged past Venezuela 6-3, Australia slipped past Germany 4-2, the US bettered South Africa 4-2, the Netherlands down South Korea 5-1 and Mexico trounced Spain 19-1.

 Wednesday will see the 16 teams play their final games of the preliminaries. The top four teams of each group then go on to compet in the quarterfinals starting Friday.

 The 16-team World Cup began November 7 and runs until November 18, with the games played at four stadiums in Taipei and Taichung.

 Sixteen teams are participating in the biennial event staged by the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
