The committee's secretary-general Prasert Ngam-phan said yesterday it had punished many teachers caught laying illegal bets, and that the recent resolution of the committee was strictly based on a Cabinet resolution on teachers.
He said gambling on the SET Index had become popular because it could be done every day, unlike the underground lottery, which operates on a 15-day period. He conceded that since betting on the SET Index was not considered illegal, the committee was unable to sack any teachers found betting on it.
"Teachers are supposed to be role models for society, and should protect their reputations because they're teaching young people," Prasert said.
