Gothom was awarded an Officer de la Legion d'Honneur - one of France's highest awards presented to both civilians and military officers.
It was established by Napoleon in 1802 and is conferred upon French citizens and foreigners for outstanding achievements in military or civil life.
Gothom has done much for many and among the guests were the ambassadors of Australia, United States and Switzerland.
Others included former prime minister Anan Panyarachun, social critic Sulak Sivaraksa and Songsakdi Owlarn.
The National Economic and Social Advisory Council sent a delegation and Air France was represented by Porntip Arya.
Gothom is currently council chairman as well as Mahidol University Research Centre for Peace Building director. He is a National Legislative Assembly member.
The award recognises Gothom's role in social work, especially peace.
However, many are unaware Gothom, along with Porntip Arya, translated "Terre Des Hommes" by Antoine de Saint-Exupery into Thai as "Paendin khong rao".
