Most can tolerate corrupt govt

Most people can tolerate a corrupt government as long as their personal well-being is cared for, an opinion survey has found.

"This means the majority of Thais lack a clear conscience of what is right and wrong," Culture Minister Khunying Khaisri Sri-aroon said yesterday. That could bode ill for the December 23 general election, she added.

The survey was conducted by the Centre for the Promotion of National Strength on Moral Ethics and Values together with the Abac Poll Research Centre.

Khaisri called on everyone to exercise caution and look back to see how crooked governments had hurt the country.

"Poor people can be ethical. We should embrace sufficiency economics," she said.
