BUDGET DEFICIT

Deficits necessary for 2 more years

The government needs to run budget deficits for another two fiscal years, 2009 and 2010, to boost the economy, said Suparut Kawatkul, permanent secretary for finance.

The government has set a budget deficit for the current fiscal year at 1.8 per cent of gross domestic product. Suparut said the new government was unlikely to increase the planned expenditures of Bt1.66 trillion for this fiscal year.

He said the new government would be formed in January or February and would at that point be almost halfway through the current fiscal year, which started on October 1.
