Even if the globe wasn't getting warmer, I never quite understand why Down Under needs to showcase winter fashion just before its summer. Saying something like that it is sure the fashion industry there will leave me out in the cold, which means they will ignore and not invite me to any of their events or become part of a group.

Susan found herself left out in the cold after she strongly criticised the board's decision on the repositioning of the company.  

Michael can't leave you out in the cold just because you've mentioned something he does not want to hear.

But if someone or something leaves somebody in the shadow, they are so good that another person or thing seems unimportant by comparison.

In the final round, Sarah sang beautifully but Nick put her completely in the shadow.

Since Sarah had put a lot of effort into this singing contest and hoped that she would win, the result certainly left a bad taste in her mouth; she has an unpleasant memory about it.

The experience at the boarding school during the summer camp left a bad taste in Sam's mouth; he did not want to go back there again.

  

Cindy who is very close to Sarah believes that in times like this she cannot leave Sarah in the lurch; if you leave somebody in the lurch you leave them when they are in difficulty or in a dangerous situation and need help.

He just left us in the lurch though he knew that we relied on his expertise to get us through this difficult time.
