Kamoltip, Yupa make shock exit

[BEACH VOLLEYBALL] Thailand's No 1 Kamoltip Kulna and Yupa Pukrongploy suffered a premature exit from the Phuket Thailand Open after losing both their first-round matches at Karon Beach yesterday.

In the morning session, Kamoltip and Yupa, who finished third in the World Challenger in Beijing recently, lost 19-21 23-21 15-12 to French qualifiers Eva Hamzaoui and Deborah Giaoui in a close match.

"We were playing without pressure because we know an international event like this is tough. But I made a wrong decision at an important point, which completely changed the momentum of the game and we couldn't get back into our game," said the 30-year-old Kamoltip.

The Thai duo also failed to find their form in the second match, falling to Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler of Germany 21-14 19-21 15-11. The Thais crashed out of the six-day event under the tournament's double-elimination format.

"They clearly took advantage of their height and their offensive game was really strong. We couldn't get going and squandered our chances," said Yupa.

Thailand's second pairing Jarunee Sannok and Usa Tenpaksee defeated Cristine Saka Santanna and Andrezza Rtvelo Martins of Geogia 21-16 21-19 in the first match.

However, they could not match the German duo of Anja Gunther and Geeske Banck and lost 21-10 21-18 in the second match.

Jarunee and Usa have another match in hand to qualify for the second round when they take on the German pair of Holtwick and Semmler.

The event, which is the final round of the season, also lost third seeds Chen Xue and Xi Zhang of China in the preliminary round.

The Chinese duo, who were upset 23-21 21-19 by Mered de Vries and Sanne Keizer of Netherlands in their first game, were forced to end their campaign early because of injury.
