Police said Hada Bulah, Ekaphan Awaelong, Yupairan Lateh and Sran Hajisalae were arrested after Sansu Hajijehma, a suspect nabbed shortly after the blasts, confessed that they were hired to carry out the bombings.

The multiple explosions along a street in downtown Narathiwat where there are a number of karaoke bars were seen as a direct attack on vice in the predominantly Muslim deep South.

The insurgency that flared up the region in the beginning of 2004 has claimed more than 2,600 lives so far while the authorities struggle to restore peace.

In neighbouring Yala province, two men were shot dead yesterday morning by a group of gunmen in a pickup truck.

The victims, Isaman Saesaha and Dorohning Neding, were sitting and chatting in front of their house when the gunmen opened fire with M-16 rifles, police said.
