His brother Nipol, 23, told police his sibling worked at the site, along with the rest of the family, to earn Bt180 a day dur?ing a break while his school was closed because of flooding.
Nipol was operating the crane hoisting the pillar while Saenphum and other workers guided it into line. But the pil?lar slipped and fell on the boy, killing him instantly.
Nipol was charged with recklessness causing death.
Police inspected the crane and found it in a dilapidated condition with evidence of repairs. They said they would continue the investigation to find others responsible for the fatality.
The brothers' mother Luan Chancharoen, 43, said Saenphum was a diligent boy who had achieved good aca?demic results while helping his parents on weekends. The boy hoped to became a civil servant to earn a steady income to sup?port his parents, saying he had been the family's hope.
Nipol was grief-stricken after the accident and under so much stress he could not talk to anyone, she said.
