PORNPONG AND SIVACHANDRAN QUALIFY FOR BARCLAYS SINGAPORE OPEN

Singapore, October 31: Thai rookie Pornpong Phatlum produced a jig of joy after grabbing one of three qualifying places available at the Barclays Singapore Open on Wednesday morning following a six-way play-off.

The 20-year-old's hands were shaking over his par putt from one foot and after tapping the ball home, he danced in jubilation on the greenside at the Sentosa Golf Club's Tanjong course.

Malaysia's S. Sivachandran and Ben St John of England also made nervy pars to seal their places in the US$4 million Asian Tour event with Germany's Jochen Lupprian, Zimbabwe's Ryan Cairns and Chinese Taipei's Lien Lu-sen missing the chance to take on a world-class line-up which includes world number two Phil Mickelson and defending champion Adam Scott.

"My hands were shaking over the last putt even though it was just a one footer," said Pornpong, who turned professional two years ago. "I am so excited. It will be great to play in the Barclays Singapore Open with big names like Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Adam Scott. It is a great opportunity for me."

England's Simon Griffiths and Lin Chien-bing of Chinese Taipei had qualified on Tuesday evening after shooting scores of 67 and 68 respectively. Pornpong was the second Thai to successfully qualify for Asia's richest national Open after teenager Pavit Tangkamolprasert prevailed in Monday's qualifying.

Sivachandran endured a restless night after thinking he had blown his chances with a bogey at the last hole on Tuesday but he showed enough composure to get up and down for par in the play-off.

"I'm really happy. My target was to shoot a 68 in the qualifiers but I missed it by one. It's great that I have a chance to play on the Championship course now.

"I didn't sleep well last night. I was a bit nervous and it got to me when I was chipping my third shot in the play-off. But I made a good chip for an easy par," said the 28-year-old Malaysian, who will be making his debut at the Barclays Singapore Open which tees off on Thursday.
