The stark reality of liquor

A photograph entitled "Side Dish" by Seksan Wangjaisuk won a Centre for Alcohol Studies contest to reflect the impact of drinking alcohol, centre director Bundit Sornpaisarn said yesterday.

Published on October 31, 2007

Seksan said the picture was taken from a real life situation involving a girl who was terrified of her drunken father. The father always beat her mother when he was drunk. The parents split eventually, and the girl went to live with her aunt.

"What happens shows clearly that people don't just take alcohol, but that alcohol takes their lives," he said.

The photography competition on the effects of alcohol was run by the Public Health Ministry's centre and related agencies. Other winning photographs included "The End of a Drinker" by Patcharanant Boonterm and "The Last Glass of Liquor" by Weeraphan Chaikhiri.

All photos will be published for distribution at a national conference on alcohol studies this year, Bundit said.

He said Thais spend Bt2 billion on alcohol each year.

Between 40 and 60 per cent of road accidents each year, in which 14,000 people die and 942,000 are injured, are related to drink-driving.
