Child adoption laws

The Cabinet has approved draft legislation to protect children born via assisted reproductive technology, government spokesman Chaiya Yimwilai said yesterday.

The proposal, made by the Social Development and Human Security Ministry, asserts that child-protection measures are necessary because conflicts might arise between surrogate mothers and donor parents, Chaiya said.

The law is intended to help couples who cannot have children on their own, establish the parentage status of children born by assisted reproductive technologies and prevent interested parties from taking advantage of the situation, Chaiya said.

The Cabinet also approved draft child-adoption legislation in line with the ministry's aim to encourage more Thai people, instead of foreigners, to adopt orphans and protect children's rights.
