Stam announces his retirement

Amsterdam- Dutch international defender Jaap Stam on Monday announced his immediate retirement from football.



The 35-year-old, who returned to the Netherlands in 2006, has been struggling with injuries at Ajax Amsterdam.

 He achieved huge success with English Premier League club Manchester United, whom he joined from PSV Eindhoven in 1998. He won three Premiership titles, as well as the Champions League in 1999.

 Stam, who was capped 67 times by the Netherlands, moved to Lazio Rome and AC Milan, before joining Ajax, with whom he had a contract till the end of this season.
