Wa leader Maha Sang dies

Wa National Army (WNA) leader Maha Sang, who was convicted in Thailand of drug trafficking, passed away yesterday in Chiang Mai at the age of 62, according to relatives.

Maha Sang was arrested in 2003 on charges of drug trafficking from Burma to Thailand. His case was under the consideration of the appeal court after the primary court ruled to seize his assets valued at Bt50 million.

The WNA, a small armed group, is based along the Thai-Burma border near Mae Hong Son. The group is said to have no clear policy on whether to fight for independence like other ethnic minorities in Burma.

Thai officials consider the group as drug traffickers and say their arsenal of weapons is used to protect the transport of drugs rather than struggle for independence.
