Govt drops Currency Act amendment

Finance Minister Chalongphob Sussangkarn said on Tuesday that he would drop the draft amenments on the Currency Act.

Chalongphob said he would pass on the draft to the next government.

He made the comment after Prime Minister Surayudh Chulanont requested Finance Ministry to organise more public hearing before resubmiting the draft amendments on the Currency Act to the Cabinet for consideration.

Given that the election would be called soon, it would mean little time for the Bank of Thailand and the Finance Ministry.

After financial crisis of 1997, many people no

longer trust the central bank because it made a big mistake

in defending the baht that triggered the 1997 economic crisis,

Chalongphob said.
