Private sector 'must drive the economy'

The private sector must cooperate to strengthen efficiencies and drive the economy now, and not wait for a new government likely lacking in unity, Thailand Development Research Institute honorary adviser Ammar Siamwalla says.

He told Business Development Department awards yesterday that the next government would likely be a coalition.

"This will result in delayed decision making, while the economy may face difficulties in the face of high international competition," he said.

Trade associations will play a more significant role in the economy, which should improve next year. Its buoyancy will be driven by the private sector, he said.  Ammar warned the new government to listen to the private sector, both local and foreign.

In spite of negative factors at play today, local trade can compete in the world market, he said.

Trade associations can become stronger with cooperation and less reliance on government help, he added.

The Thai Life Insurance Asso-ciation won the department's efficiency award. The Thai Shippers Association and the Isaan Truckers Enterprise Association were named the most successful. The House Builders Association and the Thai Furniture Association won quality service awards. The Northern Handicraft Manufacturers and Exporters Association was recognised as the most efficient organisations.
