Sonthi dismisses PPP's allegation

Deputy PM General Sonthi Boonyaratglin Monday dismissed an allegation that he ordered soldiers to Northeast provinces to intimidate canvassers of the People Power Party.

He said the soldiers were dispatched, particularly to Si Sa Ket where PPP mentioned, on a security mission to handle problems of drugs, illegal immigration and illegal border trade.

Sonthi said the mission had no link to classified security documents, which allegedly covers a plot to block PPP under deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra's shadow from returning to power.

PPP spokesman Kuthep Saikrajang had alleged on Sunday that the soldiers were acting on the orders of Sonthi as former Council for National Security chairman rather than Army chief General Anupong Paochinda.
