Health of King, sister improving

Princess Galyani able to perform exercises, HM off antibiotics

Published on October 29, 2007

Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana is getting increasing movement in her right arm and right leg, a fourth Royal Household Bureau statement on her condition said yesterday.

The elder sister of His Majesty the King is more conscious and can perform some physical exercises. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRT) scan showed minimal brain swelling, said the statement, citing the Commission of Royal Physicians.

The commission has continued providing medication and physical therapy in treating the Princess, who has cancer.

The statement addressed Her Royal Highness by her extended name of "Krom Luang Narathiwas Rajanagarindra".

She and the King are both being treated at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital.

The 16th Royal Household Bureau statement on the condition of His Majesty said his large intestine had performed normally and he was no longer receiving antibiotics. His physical strength has increased, it added.

A large number of well-wishers, including politicians, senior civilians and military officials, continued to visit His Majesty and Her Royal Highness at the hospital and sign messages hoping for their speedy recovery. Princess Galyani's staff provided 50,000 postcard-size images of her for visitors.

A group of Rayong-based students led by Kamol Kantiyangkool performed angklung musicals featuring royally composed songs while artist Hongjorn Saneh-ngarmjaroen distributed 1,000 large prints to the crowds of one of his famous images featuring the King.

Meanwhile, the Culture Ministry and Silpakorn University's Faculty of Music are planning to establish a classical music institute to mark the 84th birthday of Her Royal Highness, said Culture Minister Khunying Khaisri Sriaroon.

The institute will be located on a 14-rai plot underneath Rama VIII Bridge on the Phra Nakhon side and be called The Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute for Classical Music, which she has approved.

Her Royal Highness is a known lover of Western classical music and has long supported musical training in Thailand.

Construction is expected to take four years after Cabinet approval is granted in the near future. The design of the institute's buildings will be based on traditional Thai arts. Her Royal Highness's personal pictures and details of her work in teaching French in Thailand will be put on display.

The ministry and Chiang Mai University will hold an exhibition in honour of Her Royal Highness from November 2-12. The exhibition will then be held at Mae Fa Luang University in Chiang Rai from November 16-25.
