Nowadays women find themselves in the midst of a silent killer, breast cancer, which proves fatal for greater numbers of women each year than any other form of cancer expect for cervical. Women living in urban areas and enjoying a modern lifestyle face a greater risk, as do those who face stress, experience premature menstruation or minimal breast feeding, or eat a diet rich in fatty foods.
Thamarat Chokwatana, director and executive vice president of ICC International Co, recently launched a special mammography mobile unit to help city women detect the silent killer early. It's touted as Asia's first full digital mammography mobile unit as it's equipped with advance technology and ultra modern systems worth more than Bt25 million. The unit is being utilised to celebrate the auspicious occasion of His Majesty the King's 80th birthday this year.
Held at the Piano Hall and Morragot Terrace of Central Chidlom, the launch ceremony was joined by superstars including Wongchanok Chivasiri, Pawarisa Phenchart, Sunisa Jett and Sirium Pakdidumrongrith. They also had a chance to undergo a breast-cancer check-up and listen to a talk entitled "Catch Up with Breast Cancer" by Dr Krit Photisuwan.
"At the moment, there are no known preventive strategies for breast cancer. Therefore, the best way is to be able to diagnose it at an early stage, when it can be successfully treated. It is very simple to perform self checks at home. One of these is to lift one arm above your head and use the fingertips of the other hand to gently massage around the breasts. You can also compare the size of each breast. If you feel a lump, you must see the doctor right away," says Dr Krit.
