Warning on cosmetics

At least 13 cosmetic products on the market use chemicals that could cause irritation and skin allergies, Deputy Public Health Minister Morakot Kornkasem said yesterday.

The minister said the Food and Drug Administration had surveyed shops and stalls on a regular basis. Recent research showed that 13 cosmetic products contained banned chemicals such as ammoniated mercury, hydroquinone and retinoic acid.

The brands are: Samunprai Raksa Siew Fa, Aloe-Vera cream by Taleena Cream, Herbal Cream by Dr Tawan, Cream by Dr Tawan, Karme Whitening Cream Night Cream, Hymera Night Cream, WEiJiAO Double Night Cream, WeiJiAO Whitening Essence, Day-Cream by Jiao Ling, Night Cream by Jiao Ling, Cai Ni Ya with sun logo, Cai Ni Ya with moon logo, and Hymera Day Cream.

Morakot said some products under the Eagles Brown Henna and SPA brands also published incorrect information on their labels. Manufacturers and sellers of unsafe cosmetics are liable to a fine of Bt60,000 and/or up to one year in jail.
