Liverpool struggling to qualify after another loss

Hamburg- Liverpool are in danger of failing to make it out of the group phase of the Champions League after going down 2-1 to Besiktas Istanbul Wednesday.

Serdar Ozkan opened the scoring with a shot on 13 minutes that took a deflection off Sami Hyypia and Bobo doubled the home side's lead with a breakaway goal nine minutes from time.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard pulled one back two minutes later but the Turks held on to register their first win of the campaign.

"They had two chances from our mistakes and they took them," said Gerrard.

"We had a mountain to climb before this game and we have an even bigger one now."

The result means last season's beaten finalists now sit bottom of Group A with just one point from three games, six adrift of leaders Marseille, who played out a 1-1 draw with Porto.

"We need to keep going and win our final three games," said Gerrard. "We're capable of winning our last three games."

Two headed goals from Alberto Gilardino and a second-half brace from Clarence Seedorf helped defending champions AC Milan to a 4-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in Group D, a result that moves Carlo Ancelotti's side level with the Ukrainians at the top on six points.

Gilardino netted his first from a corner after six minutes and made it 2-0 eight minutes later when he got on the end of a Seedorf cross. Christiano Lucarelli pulled on back for the visitors before Seedorf made the match safe for Milan.

A late goal from Oscar Cardozo helped Benfica to a 1-0 victory over Celtic in the other group match.

Chelsea sit top of Group B with seven points after a 2-0 defeat of Schalke 04 at Stamford Bridge. Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer gifted the home side the opening goal after just four minutes when he let Florent Malouda's weak shot slip through his legs.

Didier Drogba made it 2-0 with a diving header shortly after the restart. Rosenborg move up to second behind the Londoners on four points after a surprise 2-0 win over Valencia.

Real Madrid were given a real scare before two goals from Robinho helped the Spanish champions eventually overcome Olympiakos 4-2 in Group C to move top on seven points.

Raul Gonzalez put the home side in front after just two minutes when Antonios Nikopolidis could only parry Ruud van Nistelrooy's shot but the sides were level five minutes later when Predrag Djordjevic set up Luciano Galletti to make it 1-1.

Olympiakos were reduced to 10 men after 12 minutes when Vassilis Torosidis received a red for a last-man foul on Van Nistelrooy but took a shock lead through Julio Cesar on 47 minutes before Robinho equalized for the Spanish giants.

Van Nistelrooy then missed a penalty before Robinho struck again and a late goal from Balboa secured the win. In the other match in Group C, Werder Bremen managed their first points of the campaign as goals from Boubacar Sanogo and Hugo Almeida helped the Bundesliga side to a 2-1 victory over Lazio.
