Abhisit wants some leeways on campaigning rules

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva called for the Election Commission on Wednesday to remain flexible about campaigning rules on grounds that rigid enforcement would drive candidates to campaign in questionable manner.

"Too much restrictions will lead to too many violations and it is in everyone's interest if campaigning is transparent," he said.

Abhisist suggested for the EC to set equal air time for every party to advertise campaign messages rather than ban the broadcast altogether.

He said his party was ready to comply with the campaigning rules.

The EC is in the process of drafting regulations on campaigning via billboards and broadcasting.

In a related story, the royal decree on the December 23 general election will take effect on Thursday following its publication in the Royal Gazette, the Cabinet Secretariat said on Tuesday.

The decree, endorsed by His Majesty the King last week, marks the official launch of campaigning.

The Election Commission sets to start the registration of party-list candidates on November 7 to 11 in Bangkok vying for 80 House seats. Candidates for direct vote will resister in their respective constituencies on November 12 to 16 to compete for 400 House seats.

Bangkok is zoned into 12 constituencies, each having three House seats up for grabs.
