Singapore doubles F-15 fleet with purchase of 12 more

SINGAPORE -- Singapore is buying 12 more F-15 Strike Eagle fighter planes from aviation giant Boeing to double the air force's arsenal, officials said on Tuesday.

The twin-seat F-15s were picked over five rival designs from the United States, Europe and Russia.

The first is expected to undergo flight testing starting next month.

The latest purchase builds on an order said to be worth 1 billion US dollars.

Boeing has produced more than 1,500 F-15s flown by the US, South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Israel.

"The Strike Eagle is a combat-tested fighter with the most technologically advanced systems," said Chris Chadwick, Boeing's vice-president.

Some of Singapore's aircraft will be stationed at a US base in the state of Idaho, where pilots and ground crew will be trained.//DPA
