No money politics vow

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva vowed yesterday to overcome money politics and expected the people to rally behind his party should his opponents attempt to buy the votes of MPs in order to elect a runner-up as prime minister.

"The people will be the judge on any attempts to deprive a winning party from forming the coalition," he said.

He urged voters to scrutinise candidates and policies instead of allowing money to dominate the campaigning, saying the failure to do so might end up in MPs being willing to betray their trust.

He also chided the rival People Power Party for opposing the Sonthi Boonyaratglin committee in charge of fighting vote-buying.

"I am suspicious as to why People Power is critical of measures designed to fight electoral fraud," he said.

People Power secretary-general Surapong Suebwonglee earlier said the Sonthi committee might be a pretext to undermine his party's campaigning activities.

Surapong had raised a post-election scenario in which, regardless of the poll outcome, MPs might vote to elect the most qualified party leader as prime minister - by-passing the Democrats.
