Campaign spendings to be capped

The Election Commission will likely set the cap for campaign spendings at Bt1.5 million per candidate following Monday's meeting with parties' representatives.

All major parties, including Democrat and Chat Thai, have agreed to the cap while small parties suggest each candidate to spend no more Bt500,000.

Inputs from parties would help the EC to finalise its decision on the issue.

The calculation on campaign spendings was based on the Bt1.4 million cap for the February 2005 election as well as factoring in adjusted costs.

In case of disqualified result, the spendings for revote will likely be either onethird or half of the cap in the first round of vote.

Partylist Candidates for proportionate voting will observe the same spending limits as constituency candidates.

The EC solicited opinions on the campaigning rules, including fair air time and uniformed billboards and flyers, and would make its ruling on the matter in due course.
