Prasong said he understood the necessity for arms procurement although he had some doubts why the contract was awarded inspite of opposition.
He said he learnt that the deal was rejected earlier because no one could adequately answer questions raised by the Office of the Auditor General. Later the auditor involved was abrubtly transferred to another job, he added.
He also stated that the deal should have been concluded on a barter basis to exchange Thai agricultural produce with the vehicles.
Defence Minister Boonrawd Somtas put the deal on hold last week pending the outcome of a probe on alleged irrigularities.
