Security Bill needed to prevent attacks

Deputy Prime Minister General Sonthi Boonyaratglin insisted Thursday that the controversial security bill is necessary for the future of the country.

He said the new law would strengthen the internal security while preventing international terrorist attacks.

First Army Region commander Lt-General Prayuth Chan-ocha said the security bill was needed for military officials to carry out their duty to prevent possible attacks.

The bill has raised public doubts that the government was facilitating some powerful group manoeuvres to cling to power.

Although the Council of State had amended the bill to make the prime minister instead of the Army chief in charge of the internal security operations command, some members of the National Legislative Assembly alleged the changes were "just tactics not a structural change".
