Bangkok electric wires go underground

The National Energy Policy Committee yesterday approved the Metropolitan Electricity Authority's master plan to put electric wires underground.

Energy Minister Piyasvasti Amranand said that the National Economic and Social Development Board will review the investment budget of Bt77.7 billion and the Finance Ministry will handle the financing.

The project will run from 2008 to 2022.

The committee at the meeting on Thursday also approved the nuclear power infrastructure development plan. In the first three years, the Energy Ministry will set up a department to oversee the development and the law would be drafted.

The committee also approved the establishment of Egat International Co Ltd, as a subsidiary of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand to be in charge of overseas investment. Its initial registered capital will be Bt50 million. Egat International will be governed by the state enterprise law.

Also approved was the plan to increase the power to be purchased from Laos within 2015 from 5,000 to 7,000 megawatts.
