The Abac Poll Research Centre index in September recorded drops in happiness levels on a number of different fronts and in comparison with the period of the coup anniversary and one year ago, centre director Dr Noppadon Kannika said.

The overall happiness index in September fell to 5.94 from 6.30 a month earlier. It was at the same level recorded in July, Noppadon said. A level of 10 indicates maximum happiness.

Noppadon suggested happiness was falling because of dissatisfaction with the performance of the Surayud Chulanont government.

Contentment with social justice took a hit in September, slipping to 5.47 from 5.80 in September one year ago.

Family satisfaction is down, too, at 6.14 in September compared with 7.88 a year ago.

Employment optimism has crashed to 6.11 from 7.18 in September 2006.

Individually, people are less positive as well. Physical health is down at a factor of 6.07, compared with 6.56 12 months before and mental health dipped to 5.84 from 6.22 in the corresponding period of 2006.

Just 4.7 per cent of respondents said they experienced no unhappiness in their lives.
