Fusion with a frisson

A Bangkok restaurant offers a delicious combination of Australian and Thai cuisines

Published on October 14, 2007

With his latest menu, executive chef-director Jakkrit "Rom" continues to introduce Wyndham Thai diners to dishes that showcase his expertise in combining cuisines in unusual ways.

"I guess you could call it fusion," says director Paul Jackson.

Whatever you call Rom's creations, drop by Wyndham Thai and discover elegant dishes that blend Australian and Thai cuisines in ways that you won't even find in Hong Kong, where Wyndham Thai was first established.

In the new menu, Rom has added over 35 soups and lots of dishes perfect for sharing, rolls full of vegetables, seafood, spices and seasonings with lovely dips.

Rom's soft-shell crab rolls (Bt390), for instance, are stuffed with avocado, mango and cucumber and come with a dipping sauce of chilli, mint and lime. Already among the most popular is a dish of coconut crepes (Bt360) that are filled with a green papaya salad reminiscent of som tam and topped with crab meat.

The Wyndham Thai main dishes are memorable, such as the baked barramundi fillet (Bt700), served with roasted cherry tomatoes and accompanied by a tamarind and chilli salsa and his "simple" home-style grilled chicken breast (Bt475). The chicken, marinated in garlic, pepper and coriander, is served in a mild chilli coconut sauce, Rom's take on gai yang (but much more elegant).

The baby veal rack (Bt825) is certainly special. Served on a bed of lemongrass rice, it comes with a very mild green-curry sauce.

Save room for Rom's desserts. His coconut creme brulee with ginger ice cream (Bt185) is very light, and his poached pear filled with lemongrass ice cream (Bt185) is a fruity way to finish the meal.

Wyndham Thai has also expanded its wine cellar, with prices by the glass for selected wines ranging from Bt185 to Bt350. In addition, Rom and Jackson are updating the set menus for lunch and dinner. At present, the three-course set menu for lunch is Bt299, with a choice of three menus. They're also working on a series of matched wine and food menus with three different set dinners that range from a four course/four wine combination to a seven course/seven wine one  (Bt2,250 to Bt3,075).

Wyndham Thai is available for large and small meetings. Just give the boys a call. Space for parking is ample.
