Deputy Bangkok Governor Bannasopit Mekvichai said heavy rains late Thursday night exceeded 70 millimetres, causing the water level in canals to rise. The water level in Klong Burirom was 75 centimetres, above the critical point of 65 centimetres, she said.
Bannasopit said the hardest-hit areas were Prawet, Lat Krabang and some parts of Bang Kapi district. The operation of transport boats along Klong Saen Saeb would remain suspended until the water level was deemed safe for passengers, she said.
Heavy downpours on Wednesday night and Thursday night caused flooding in the Lat Phrao and Sukhumvit areas of Bangkok, especially the stretch of Sukhumvit Road from the Bang Na intersection to Soi 62, where work on extending the Skytrain is under way.
Many areas of the city remained flooded until yesterday morning but the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Department of Drainage and Sewerage director Somsak Klanphot promised that his office would drain and pump water from these areas yesterday. He said debris clogging major drains would also be cleared.
