Court for drunks

Central and regional traffic courts should be set up immediately to deal with drunk driving, Justice Ministry permanent secretary Charan Phakdithanakul said yesterday.

Published on October 12, 2007

He said traffic courts, which would bypass police investigations into road accidents or vehicular crimes, would ensure speedy process to subject violators to immediate criminal liabilities.

The penalties would not be harsh but would be aimed at rehabilitating them or ridding drivers of bad habits.

Judges, prosecutors and special investigators assigned to work with traffic courts should be well-versed in "traffic and human factor engineering".

Associate judges and community leaders should also be assigned to assist in the traffic courts' affairs.
