True Internet will enjoy 25 per cent of that market this year, assistant director Jay Jootar said yesterday. Skype commands half of the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service market, followed by True Internet, which wants to become the market leader next year, he said.

The number of VoIP PC-to-telephone callers is expected to grow to 100,000 next year, from 50,000 this year, he said.

Broadband-Internet subscribers number almost a million.

True Internet, a subsidiary of True Corp, started offering VoIP calling service from PC to PC and PC to phones in July under a licence from the National Telecommunications Commission. The regulator has yet to permit anyone to offer VoIP calling service from phone to phone.

True Internet has spent Bt80 million on developing its VoIP business. It has 70,000 registered users, but not all are active.

Calling from PC to PC between True Internet subscribers is free of charge. True Internet charges its subscribers Bt1.50 per call from PCs to any domestic telephone provider and cellular provider True Move and Bt1.50 per minute for calls to other domestic cellular providers.

Connecting to international cellular or landline services costs about 85 satang a minute.
