One of the beachfront rooms at The Millennium Resort Patong Phuket, which has its soft opening on November 17.

It is a central part of the Jungceylon complex at Patong Beach on the holiday island.

This new five-star resort is set in lush tropical landscape in the middle of Phuket town. There are two wings, one beachfront and the other lakeside. There are 197 rooms in the beach wing and 224 in the lake.

It is in Phuket's main tourist area and described as a perfect getaway for holidaymakers. It caters to corporate travellers, too.

The Millennium believes about 60 per cent of its guests will be from Europe and the remainder from Asia - mainly from Japan and South Korea.

The grand opening is set for early next year.

The hotel aims at an average occupancy rate of more than 65 per cent next year.

Phuket Square operates the 10-month-old Jungceylon complex. Deputy chief executive officer Prawit Janyasittikul said a 15,000-square-metre Robinson Department Store covering one-and-a-half levels of the complex would also open next month.

The Robinson Jungceylon Patong is the 21st Robinson location and aims to attract shoppers seeking "modern and fashionable lifestyles".

Supat Ngamwongpaiboon, marketing director of SF Cinema City, said the company would officially open five multiplex cinemas in SF Cinema City Jungceylon on Thursday.

He said the development was in line with the company's strategy to open cinemas in retail complexes in prime destinations.

The company will open multiplex cinemas in Central Chaeng Wattana in Bangkok and Central Pattaya next year.

SF Cinema City and Jungceylon shopping complex yesterday announced the long-awaited Phuket Film Festival that will start on October 20.

"We're spending Bt20 million on the international film festival, being held in Phuket for the first time. Phuket is a well-known tourist destination around the world and we want to have an international film festival similar to Cannes in France," said Prawit.

The festival is an event that will attract visitors ahead of the traditional high season.

Other events are planned for the rest of the year, including the Phuket Carnival that starts on November 1.

Prawit said Jungceylon was attracting about 20,000 visitors a day and expected this to increase to between 30,000 and 40,000 daily during the high season.
