Torres saves Liverpool's blushes

Fernando Torres struck a last-minute equalizer Sunday to earn Liverpool a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur and preserve their unbeaten start to the Premier League season while Arsenal returned to the top with victory over Sunderland.

After starting the season in impressive fashion, Liverpool's form has slipped of late, with the rotation policy of manager Rafa Benitez coming in for severe criticism after Wednesday's Champions League defeat to Marseille.

And troubled Tottenham looked like increasing the discontent at Anfield as they held a 2-1 lead until Torres headed in Steve Finnan's cross in injury time.

Ukrainian forward Andriy Voronin had given Liverpool a 12th-minute lead, before two goals from Robbie Keane in the space of three minutes straddling half-time turned the game on its head.

Spurs, whose manager Martin Jol has been under pressure almost since the start of the season, remain in the relegation zone.

Chelsea continued their slow rehabilitation following the departure of Jose Mourinho with a 1-0 win away to Bolton.

Salomon Kalou got the only goal of the game after 41 minutes as Chelsea climbed to sixth in the table.

Manchester City are still third after two Elano goals helped them to a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough, while Blackburn beat Birmingham 2-1 to go fifth.

Michael Owen, recovering from surgery on his groin, came off the bench to score a last-minute goal as Newcastle beat Everton 3-2.

Reading won the big game at the bottom, Kevin Doyle's 61st-minute goal giving them a 1-0 win over Derby.

In the lunchtime kick-off, Arsenal returned to the top of the table after an extraordinary 3-2 win over Sunderland.

Robin van Persie and Philippe Senderos had them 2-0 up in 14 minutes, but Sunderland fought back with goals from Ross Wallace and Kenwyne Jones to level three minutes into the second half.

Van Persie eventually secured the victory with an 80th-minute winner to move the Gunners two points clear of Manchester United, 4-0 winners over Wigan on Saturday. dpa
