Thailand bank on striker Sarayooth

[SOCCER] Thailand will rely on Sarayooth Chaikamdee to lead their attacking line against minnows Macau in their 2010 World Cup first-qualifying round home fixture today.

Published on October 8, 2007

Sarayooth surprisingly was recalled into the team after being omitted from the Asian Cup squad in July due to his form.

Given that veteran striker Kiatisak Senamuang has retired from national duty, Thailand, whose current world ranking is 117th, have fewer options up front, prompting Chanvit Pholchivin, the national coach, to give Vietnam's Binh Dinh forward Sarayooth another chance to prove himself against Macau, who stand at lowly 188th place.

The presence of Sarayooth, a typical target-man who is dubbed "Jo five-yard" as most of the goals he has scored came from close range efforts, should come in handy for the hosts, who are aiming to establish a stranglehold on the tie prior to the return leg next week. The match between Thailand and Macau will take place at Supachalasai stadium. Channel 7 will televise the game live from 7pm.
