Medium is the message - please adjust your media

Movie producer Yongyoot Thongkongtoon, who studied communication arts at Chulalongkorn University two decades ago, has just learned something new about communicating.

Published on October 8, 2007

Having wrapped up work on his latest flick "Body 19", he got stuck into promoting it - by sending everyone in his mobile-phone address book a message about the upcoming premiere. It was an MMS - a photo message - but it didn't have quite the desired effect.

The feedback, rather than "count on me" and "I'll be there", went like this:

Friend A: "What did you just send me?"

Friend B: "Did you just send me a message or what?"

Friend C: "I couldn't read your message."

Friends D through Z: "Huh?"

It didn't take Yongyoot long to figure out what was wrong - and that he could fortunately reply to everybody at once to explain it. His follow-up message to all was, "I sent you the logo for 'Body 19' as an MMS, but I guess your phone doesn't recognise the format."

So the lesson is that old friends will always be able to stay in touch and communicate (and come see your films!), but they won't necessarily all keep pace with the latest technology.
