Prasong evades queries on his political ambition

National Legislative Assembly (NLA) member Prasong Soonsiri was tight-lipped on Wednesday over speculation of his political ambition to replace Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont - if the premier resigned.

"Don't ever ask me if I am ready to take the post. I take the public interest as a priority, not my personal interest," he said.

Prasong has been linked to an alleged movement aimed at toppling Surayud and his government.

As the chairman of the committee on the promotion of morality and ethics of office holders, Prasong said he had corrected the process of submitting a censure motion against the government, and resubmit it to NLA Speaker Meechai Ruchuphan.

On Tuesday, Meechai had instructed Prasong's secretary to correct the process, but he said the people concerned failed to do so.

Meechai expressed caution about the legitimacy of the censure motion and whether the committee had the right to lodge such a motion.

Meanwhile, Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister Sonthi Boonyaratglin must prove himself in his role of providing security of the country.

Abhisit also voiced concern over Surayud possibly doubling as Interior Minister.

"I think public has no doubt about his neutrality and determination to do the right thing, but as the PM he has too much work to do already," he said.
