One dead, 11 hurt in blasts in South

A soldier was killed and 11 people injured in Narathiwat province yesterday when insurgents carried out 11 bomb attacks in four districts.

In Rangae district, Army sergeant Thanapol Mahaniyom was killed and eight other people were injured when the bomb was remotely detonated. Two soldiers were in critical condition after the early morning attack.

The bomb also injured Phra Sakul Sirikosol, a 72-year-old monk who was collecting alms around a market.

Other bombs were also planted at a park, a multi-purpose sports field, and a grocery store in the district.

Following the attacks, a suspected insurgent was arrested after he tested positive for traces of explosive chemicals. However, he denied any wrongdoing.

In Waeng district, a former volunteer ranger was injured in one of two explosions.

Two patrol soldiers were injured when a bomb exploded in Si Sakhon district.

In Bacho district, two bombs exploded in front of a health centre, but nobody was injured.
