Damaged road seeks out more budget to get repaired

Department of Highways is preparing to ask for additional budget, expecting up to Bt19 billion after fiscal year of 2008, to repair damaged roads derived from over-loaded trucks.

Director general Nikorn Boonsri said yesterday that the budget for repairing the damaged road the department received from the fiscal budget of 2008 for Bt9.5 billion is not sufficient.

"There are currently 65,000-kilometre long of roads across the country under the responsibility of the department. Of which, many routes have damages and await for repairing," said he, the damaged roads needs up to Bt19 billion of budget.

Nikorn said the main reason of many damaged roads is that over-loaded trucks with weight of up to 25 tons have been allowed to use the roads. While, the roads were designed to carry as much as 21 tons of a truck.
