Former Germany keeper Kahn needs operation, out for five weeks

Munich- Former Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn will have to undergo an elbow operation and will be out for four to five weeks, his coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said on Monday.

A date for the operation has not yet been announced.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper withdrew from Bayern's weekend league match 15 minutes ahead of the kick-off and was replaced by Michael Rensing.

He drew praise from Germany coach Joachim Loew for his performance during Bayern's 1-0 victory. "Rensing does not play very often, but when he plays, he plays well."

Rensing, 23, will also be in goal for Bayern in Thursday's UEFA Cup match against Belenenses.

He has played 14 Bundesliga games for Bayern without suffering a defeat (10 victories, four draws) and has also been praised by Hitzfeld. "He is good enough to be our number one next season," the coach said.

Bayern manager Uli Hoeness believes that Rensing could take over as Germany goalkeeper from Arsenal custodian Jens Lehmann.

"Three goalkeepers could take over, Adler (Rene Adler from Leverkusen), Neuer (Schalke's Manuel Neuer) and Rensing. You can forget Enke (current third choice German keeper Robert Enke), or whoever else," he said.
