Satellite pictures show Burmese villages destroyed by military
New York - Satellite imagery of Burma show a number of villages destroyed in the last six years to clear territory for military bases, according to a US foundation Friday.
The pictures taken in 2000 and 2006 show that villages have been replaced by military sites at some 25 locations across eastern Burma, the American Association for the Advancement of Science said.
The AAAS said that the satellite photos offered the first physical evidence of eyewitness accounts of human-Rights abuses and the destruction of villages by the secretive military regime, which has ruled Burma for more than 40 years.
The military has been cracking down violently in the last week across the country on pro-democracy protests led by Buddhist monks.
