Tannery expands into retail, selling its own line of Leather furniture and decor items

Weekend Picks

Around for more than 50 years, Silp Sang Far Tannery has long supplied leather for luxury goods by Guy Laroche and other manufacturers. Four years ago, the company expanded from being a mere supplier after collaborating with an Italian furniture company to create a line of elegant interior design products under the label Leather O.

Recently managing director and designer Peter Boonsermsuwong devoted some space at his home to build two glittering glass storehouses for Leather O, stacked with a line of furniture in modern-Italian and retro-Scandinavian styles.

"I got idea for expanding the line to create leather furniture when we made furniture of our own design to decorate our house many years ago," says Peter, who holds a master's degree in business administration from Pennsylvania State University.

All products feature Silp Sang Far Tannery's cow leathers, which are imported from Ireland, Australia, North America, Japan and Europe. Scandinavian-style pieces are made of Morantee wood imported from Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as 100 per cent cotton imported from Denmark. At the heart of Leather O's product range are simple yet elegant designs that feature muted pastels as well as black, white, brown and beige. The products include sofas, ottomans, stools, tables and chairs.

"We acquired knowledge, skills and techniques from a customer who runs a furniture company in Italy," Peter explains. "We can arrange different layers of sponge to make comfortable sofas, armchairs and cushions."

Leather O also produces a line of 1970s-era reproduction furniture, as well as leather chair cases and a line of leather wall coverings featuring graphic designs inspired by flowers and animals.
